What Living In A ‘Freeze’ State Really Feels Like
“Healing isn’t about having better feelings. It’s about getting better at feeling.”
If you’re like me and you’ve been in a state of dysregulation for a long time - you may have experienced a sense of numbness.
Not feeling anything and just coasting through life.
Empty or unmotivated or uninspired or disconnected or detached.
Like life is something you “do” rather than something you can engage in and experience.
When I was in India studying breathwork, I’m not exaggerating when I tell you I felt nothing for the first three weeks.
Like, nothing.
No joy. No deep sadness. No contentment. No humour.
I was just like a ghost, moving through the world.
I didn’t realise at the time, but I was in freeze mode, designed to protect me.
My little nervous system was doing her best.
In “freeze” you literally shutdown.
It’s a state of hypo-arousal in your nervous system, where your body may have been under chronic or traumatic stress for so long that it can’t maintain the state of elevation anymore.
Your body and brain goes: “nope, we can’t handle this threat” and it just shuts down.
It may feel like:
- fatigue
- feeling disconnected from the body
- feeling lethargic, unmotivated, uninspired, hopeless and helpless
- extreme procrastination
- feeling collapsed or immobilised
- tired but wired
- disconnected from others and the world
- numb to emotions and sensations
If that’s you - or has ever been you - you’re not alone.
I’ve been there.
And I’ve supported myself to a space of regulation.
Learning about my mind/body connection through the science of the nervous system has been so fundamental to my healing and I believe this wisdom should be accessible and simple to understand for everyone.
