Four Hacks To Regulate Your Nervous System

Being stuck in survival mode can be a scary place.

You know what it’s like to be open, expansive and connected. But you just can’t seem to reach it.

I’ve been there.

Most of my life, I lived in survival.

Always waiting for the shoe to drop, being fearful of everything and worrying myself sick.

You’re not broken. You’re not bad. You’re not wrong.

We just need to support you in speaking the language of your body.

There are so many ways to support your nervous system. And these are just four ways that MAY work for you.

Real balance comes from trial and error, self discovery and finding what works best for YOU.

In the meantime, here are four things I love to use to support and regulate my nervous system.

CONNECTION
Co-regulation with people you love and care about is one of the best and simplest ways to stabilise yourself when experiencing dysregulation. We are tribal and communal creatures, and being with others who make us feel safe has a calming effect on the nervous system.

BREATH
Breath is an amazing tool that helps activate our vagus nerve (which manages our rest and digest state).

If you’re anxious, you want a prolonged exhale so a 4-2-8 might be supportive for you. 4 in, hold for 2, out for 8.

MOVEMENT
Helps shift energy, get out of the head and back into the body.

Tune in and ask yourself a simple question: how do I want to move right now? What is my body calling for? Shaking? Some cat cows? A walk?

This helps shift stagnant or highly mobilising energy.

SELF SOOTHING WITH SELF TOUCH
With compassion, you may want to meet any tension in your body and ask what it needs.

Recognise the sensation, allow it to be there, ask what it needs, compassionately provide it.

This can sometimes be a bit of a step too far for some if your body doesn’t feel super safe so if that’s the case - that is okay.

I’ve been there.

There is nothing wrong with you.

One step at a time and perhaps return to one of the above techniques.
