How I Regulate My Nervous System When I’m Anxious

When I’m anxious and restless and I’m hyper-aroused in my nervous system, there are some techniques I gravitate towards to support myself back to balance.

Our nervous system is like a fingerprint. Everyone has a different one.

Different techniques work for different people so what works for me, may not suit you.

That’s okay!

Take what resonates, leave what doesn’t.

Here are some techniques I use to help support my nervous system when I’m feeling anxious.

1) HARD TAPS ON BODY
With a light fist, I tap on my body (including my arms, chest and sometimes my legs).

This helps bring awareness back to the body and out of the mind. I may even recite: “I am safe, I am just feeling a big feeling right now. I am consciously releasing this activating energy.”

2) EFT TAPPING WITH @tapwithbrad
There is a plethora of research coming out not about the power of EFT.

I use this technique with guidance from Brad Yates who’s a specialist in the field.

3) SOOTHING TOUCH
I place my hand compassionately on a place of tension and allow myself to speak to the part of me that’s experiencing big feelings.

Talking deep, long, slow breaths at the same time to trigger the vagus nerve.

4) MOVEMENT

Sometimes when I’m anxious, the energy is pleading to be seen and shifted. It needs to be released.

So I may move around, shake, do some push-ups, run on the spot. I tune in and move in a way that feels like what my body is calling for.

Regulation is a process and one I’m still exploring and learning more about every day. It’s a process of trial and error to find what works best for you.
